Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
