An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After minutes of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Inside these communities, messages show dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
