Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
