A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
