Are You Able to Solve This? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped our Modern Globe
There are many candidates for the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that honor should go to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be produced in less than a week.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs to planks with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct vessels more quickly than any other nation, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, financial and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its rotary movement into up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts in order that they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every downward stroke while moving on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental parts.”
A fact that leads us up to today’s challenge. I’d like you to reimagine one of the fundamental concepts behind this historic invention.
Round and Up
Construct a machine that turns rotary movement to up-and-down action. Your available these components only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, that is a cylinder or sleeve into which a single the rods will fit perfectly. (Consider that it is possible to put things on a base, so that the parts do not fall down.)
The solution returns later today UK time with the answer.
